Does Insurance Cover Acupuncture?
Sometimes. Medicare covers acupuncture only for chronic low back pain, with visit limits. Private plans vary, so the answer depends on your plan. Some clinics give a superbill you can send to your insurer, and the IRS lists acupuncture among medical expenses. Of the 47 Western North Carolina clinics we list, 1 says on its own site that it is in network with an insurer, 16 offer a superbill and 9 accept HSA or FSA cards.

Medicare
Medicare covers acupuncture for chronic low back pain that has lasted 12 weeks or longer, has no identifiable systemic cause, and is not tied to surgery or pregnancy (CMS decision 30.3.3, for services on or after January 21, 2020).
Medicare covers up to 12 visits in 90 days, 8 more if you are improving, and no more than 20 treatments a year. Acupuncture for any other condition is not covered, and neither is dry needling.
The CMS decision names physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners who meet the training and license rules, plus licensed acupuncturists working as auxiliary personnel under their supervision. Ask a clinic whether it can bill Medicare before you book.
Private Insurance
Coverage depends on your plan: some cover acupuncture, some cover it only for certain conditions, and some do not cover it. Call the number on your card and ask about acupuncture benefits, visit limits and whether the clinic is in network.
On each clinic page we list the insurers the clinic names on its own site, in its own words.
Superbills
A superbill is an itemized receipt you can send to your insurer yourself for out-of-network benefits. You pay the clinic up front. Whether you get money back depends on your plan.
HSA And FSA
IRS Topic No. 502 lists amounts paid for acupuncture treatments among medical expenses. Your HSA or FSA administrator applies its own rules, so check with them. We note on each clinic page whether the clinic says it takes HSA or FSA cards.
